It is up to you to decide which route you want to take. If you are an online personal trainer, I would suggest becoming a certified personal trainer through an association. If you are going to look for a personal trainer job, your best bet might be to get a degree from school. Many employers look for a degree when hiring trainers to their staff.
No matter which avenue you decided to go down, Telecoustic there is one skill that you do need...people skills. Fitness trainers have to have people skills, people are your business. Motivating and challenging people is key to your success no matter what personal trainer field you decide to be in. Even if you are an online trainer and you do not directly have human contact, it is sometimes even more important to have people skills, so that you can easily relay your message to them.
If you go to school for a degree, look to get a degree in physical fitness, or Kinesiology (human kinetics). If you decide to become a certified trainer through an online association then you might want to try some of these places.

There are some requirements that you must pass before many of those associations approve you, so make sure you study up well. A lot of these place require you to pay a certain amount of money to join their associations, but it is still a lot more cheaper than school. They will provide you with tools and resources to help make you successful, and continue to provide you with new workouts and technologies that come out.
