The 2010 Southeastern Conference Football Championship will be a matchup between Auburn University and the University of South Carolina. The big game is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 at 4pm at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta. This is the 19th year of the SEC Championship game. The championship began in 1992 when the Southeastern Conference expanded to include Arkansas and South Carolina. The 2010 SEC Championship game pits the Eastern Division Champion South Carolina Gamecocks against the Western Division Champion Auburn Tigers.
The University of South Carolina is one of the oldest public universities in the country. Founded in 1801, its flagship campus is located in Columbia. Total enrollment at all its campuses exceeds 44,000 students, Telecoustic and the University offers 324 degree programs. South Carolina's athletics teams are known as the Gamecocks. South Carolina's football team joined the Southeastern Conference in 1992, after having been an Independent team for 20 years. Their head coach is Steve Spurrier, who is in his sixth year with the team. Spurrier previously spent twelve years as head coach of the Florida Gators and was head coach of the NFL Washington Redskins in 2002-03. The Gamecock's last bowl appearance was the 2010 Papa John Bowl, where they lost to UConn. The team's record this year is 8-3, 5-3 SEC.
Auburn University was founded in 1856 as East Alabama Male College. After several name changes over the years, the institution became known as Auburn University in 1960. Auburn has an enrollment of nearly 25,000 students and offers more than 140 majors. Auburn athletics teams are known as the Tigers. Auburn's head coach is Gene Chizik, who is in his second year with the university. Auburn appeared last year in the Outback Bowl, where they beat Northwestern. The Tigers have had an impressive 2010 season. Their record is 11-0, 7-0 SEC.
Auburn has won six SEC Championship titles, the last one in 2004. Currently Auburn is ranked #2 in the nation in all four major polls. South Carolina, currently ranked at #17, has never won the SEC title. The winner of the SEC Championship will receive an automatic invitation to a BCS Bowl game. South Carolina has never made a BCS Bowl appearance. Auburn played in the 2005 BCS Sugar Bowl, where they beat Virginia Tech. The game promises to be an exciting one for Auburn and South Carolina fans.
